Five roles

In all polarisation we encounter a limited number of roles.

  • Pusher - we all recognize the pusher, the person acting on one of the poles. He is the one that delivers the fuel for polarisation.
  • Joiner  - the ones who decides to take sides, yet always less extreme in comparison to 'the pusher'.
  • The Silent - those positioned in the middle, neutral, indifferent or nuanced and/or engaged.
  • Bridge builder - him or her overseeing the parties. Sometimes effective, more often the bridge builder only makes things worse, in spite of all good intentions.
  • Scapegoat - There is someone who will have to pay. In extreme polarisation the scapegoat is found somewhere in the middle. Be it the bridge builder or the silent.
